THE COMMITMENTS OF THE EUROPEAN UNION AND ITALY TO ACHIEVE CLIMATE NEUTRALITY

The current climate crisis -the result of rising concentrations of CO2 and other greenhouse gases produced by human activities- must be addressed because of the serious consequences it entails: climate change, melting glaciers, rising sea levels, droughts, and an increase in extreme natural phenomena (floods, storms, hurricanes, fires, etc.).

The devastating environmental and social consequences caused by global warming resulting from anthropogenic action signal the urgent need for synergistic action among all social partners.

To achieve the transition to zero-emission production and consumption patterns, the European Union, through the European Green Deal and the European Climate Law, has introduced at the EU level the legally binding targets of climate neutrality by 2050 and a 55 percent reduction in net emissions by 2030 compared to 1990.  The new Regulation, in addition to establishing an independent body empowered to monitor progress and assess an EU carbon budget between now and 2050, obliges member states to revise their National Energy and Climate Plans to align with the new overall European target of 55 percent.

Italy, despite not having a specific Climate Law, has chosen to integrate environmental protection into the Constitution (see Art.9 and 41), formalizing its commitment to contribute to this vital goal.

The CO2alition wants to encourage commitment by businesses, first and foremost at the Italian level, but not only, so that the business world can actively contribute to the achievement of these goals and evolve its business and operational models in favor of the climate.
