CO2ALITION: STARTING THE 2024 PROGRAM

The window to meet climate goals is closing very quickly. That's the warning of the 2023 UN "the closing window" report, which highlights less than encouraging data: +4% is the estimated growth in global emissions from COP21 in Paris to 2022. -10% the maximum possible cut in emissions that we would achieve by 2030 if all NDCs were met (compared to the 45% that would be required instead) and that would deliver us a 2.4-2.6°C warmer world by the end of the century.

It is clear that the international commitments of governments are not enough to guarantee the achievement of the goals and a 360-degree involvement is needed, including of civil society, territories and businesses.

Building on the positive experience of the first year, CO2alition also proposes for 2024 its program of activities dedicated to member companies, putting the concept of "working as a system" at the center. This is a necessary approach to face the common challenge of decarbonization, allowing companies to exchange best practices, share solutions, and address critical issues in a synergistic way, always starting from insights and solid scientific basis.

On January 29, the new 2024 program was presented online, which includes some important innovations especially in the direction of community development and knowledge of the different experiences of the net zero pathway that each CO2alition member encounters.

Specifically:

1. Community development

During 2024, contacts between companies and the exchange of best practices will be intensified, through meetings, feedback and news, to return a planning of activities increasingly calibrated to the knowledge, experiences and strategies of member companies.

Given the specificity of the opportunities and obstacles that each company may encounter on its path, from a sectoral perspective as well, the goal will be to decline the topics addressed according to the specificities of each member company.

2. Online and offline meetings

Compared to the previous year, in 2024 Co2alition will organize 1 in-person meetings (also available in streaming) that will be in addition to as many online meetings and moments of dialogue in which the sharing of best practices will be strengthened. Topics will be identified by consulting member companies, with the possibility of addressing multiple vertical themes within the same meeting, with both technical and inspirational guests. The goal for 2024 is to strengthen dialogue and exchange before, during and after the meetings, to return a program increasingly calibrated to the knowledge and experience of the different member companies.

3. Position paper on offsetting

Offsets and offsetting activities are often the focus of companies' carbon neutrality strategies, but they face several critical issues that undermine the credibility of the efforts undertaken, increasing the risk of greenwashing.

In continuation of what emerged from the 2023 comparisons, a dedicated position paper will be produced in 2024 to further explore and identify robust and viable criteria with respect to emissions offsetting projects.

4. Online platform

CO2alition will continue to enrich the content of the online platform: a virtual space within which all people from each member company can access the content and know-how made available by the initiative. Recordings of meetings, the presentations produced, useful in-depth links and a news section.

CO2alition is open for membership to all companies that wish to systematize, compare and exchange information, solutions and innovations to improve their decarbonization strategy.

"Concrete action is needed now. Initiatives like CO2alition serve to create a community of companies that collaborate, team up and exchange best practices to meet the climate neutrality challenge. It is only by all acting together that we can succeed." Raimondo Orsini, Director of Fondazione per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile.

"In this first year, we have experienced what it means to work as a system when faced with an issue as complex and challenging as climate neutrality. So much still needs to be done, but we can do it together." Elena Basile, Evolution Guide NATIVA
